Site English Learner Advisory Committee Meeting

Tuesday, October 19th

Vallecito Gym

The SELAC is a committee for parents or other community members who want to advocate for English Learners. The purpose of SELAC is to collaborate with school staff on programs and services for English learners and the School Site Council (SSC) on the development of the School Plan for Student Achievement.

At this meeting, we will review school demographics, outline the programs for English Learners, and engage in a question and answer session for families of English Learners.

Babysitting will be provided.

All are welcome!

Math Practices Professional Development

"To do mathematics means more than just learning the facts of mathematics - it means seeing oneself as a capable mathematical learner who has the confidence and the habits of mind to tackle new problems."

-Francis Su

Creating Mathematical Agency Using the

Math Practices

Our teachers are participating in professional development to grow student agency in math by using the Eight Mathematical Practices outlined in the Common Core standards.  Research shows that when students regularly apply these practices, they demonstrate a deeper understanding of math concepts and approach problem-solving with confidence and curiosity.

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

How can you engage your student in the  Mathematical Practices at home? Support them to develop strong mathematical habits using the following language:

October Identity Month: LGBTQ History Month

Supporting Social-Emotional Learning through

an LGBTQ Inclusive Lens

Our librarians, counselors, and teachers will be reading stories and engaging with the goal of bringing much-needed attention to:

  • Gender stereotypes
  • Self-awareness - Who am I? How am I?
  • Identity
  • Intersectionality, or put another way, the complex way that the many aspects of our identities overlap, including our race, gender, identity, class, and more.
  • Understanding ones own emotions
  • Understanding the decisions we make affect others

Here are the book titles that our elementary librarians are highlighting for the month of October for both LGBTQ+ History and our life skill for self-awareness. Teachers will also access this wonderful calendar highlighting important people in LGBTQ History.

Are you looking to volunteer on campus?

We are still in need of extra hands during lunchtime recess from 12-12:45.  You get to wear a snappy yellow vest and hang out with some really cool kids. Drop by the office if you are able to help. Volunteers must provide proof of vaccination.

Parents can access community flyers by visiting the Community Resources page on the Miller Creek School District website. New flyers this week:
