Mark Your Calendars

Reminders

  • Lunch Master orders are now open for October. Log in and select your items today so your child does not miss a day!
  • Don't forget to send your child with a water bottle every day.  We have filling stations on campus in lieu of open water fountains.
  • The Lost & Found is filling up! Items will be donated to Good Will in early October so please stop by the front of school and take a look.

Curriculum Focus: Writer's Workshop

Teachers spent time analyzing student narrative writing samples during our Wednesday afternoon professional development.  By taking the time to look closely at student work and discuss in teams, we are able to identify patterns across classrooms that inform our teaching.  We are also able to look at each individual child's work and plan for differentiated instruction through tailored mini-lessons, individual conferences, and strategy groups.

One pattern that surfaced K-5 was the need to build students' writing stamina.  This refers to a child's ability to write for an extended amount of time adding details and expanding their ideas.

How can you help at home?

  • Encourage your child to keep a journal. Decorate the cover or help them find a special blank book that is just their own.
  • Entice them with a cozy corner and an array of fun pens, envelopes, and paper.
  • Highlight meaningful, funny, or surprising events that happen in their daily life and say, "Wow! That would make a great story!  You should write that down!"
  • Don't worry if the writing isn't perfect.  Writing is a process and it is more important to begin by getting their thoughts down on paper and becoming comfortable writing for longer and longer periods of time.

Teachers will continue our focus on differentiated writing instruction through Writer's Workshop at our next professional development day on Oct. 8th.

Happy Writing!

The Miller Creek School District believes diversity is an asset, values every student, and is committed to building communities where students thrive. In order to do so, we must recognize systemic disparities in opportunities and outcomes and dedicate resources to address those disparities.

The Vallecito Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee held its first meeting of the year on Thursday.  This dedicated group of teachers and parents are working to put our mission statement into action. A part of our work this year is offering parent workshops and community events.  Would you like to get involved with this dynamic group?  Fill out the survey below:

Volunteers Needed

On Wednesday, October 6th, in conjunction with Safe Routes to School, Vallecito will participate in International Walk & Roll to School Day. Tables will be set up with information, encouragement, and light swag for walkers, riders, scooters, skaters, etc.,. Subsequently, on the first Wednesday of each month we will set up a table for Walk and Roll Wednesdays. If you are interested in volunteering to help with any of this tabling (starting about 30 minutes before the first bell), please reach out to me, David Benin (djbenin@gmail.com), Val's Safe Routes to School Parent Volunteer. Proof of vaccination is required. This is a great and fun way to promote safe and healthy travel to school. All you need to bring is yourself and some enthusiasm for our walkers and wheeled riders! Thanks.

The Miller Creek School District is experiencing a significant workforce shortage.  We are far from unique as employers are struggling to fill positions across the country.  What is unique, however, is the opportunity this presents for our community.  I can't guarantee you that working in a school is easy or that you won't go home tired at the end of the day.  But I will guarantee you that the work is deeply fulfilling.  Years from now we will look back at the pandemic and ask ourselves, "How did we show up?" I take great pride and satisfaction knowing that the teachers and staff of our little school district show up every day for kids.
