Celebrating Black History Month

In partnership with the parents from our Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee, our students enjoyed an assembly by Abada Capoeira of Marin and took walks around the school learning about the black heroes decorating classroom doors.

As you all know, our community is rich in diversity and ensuring that we are not only welcoming but embracing everyone, is at the heart of our philosophy. Our focus remains to prevent biased-based bullying, creating a gender-inclusive learning environment, tapping into the deep cultural fabric of our community, and helping our students and families see themselves as part of the larger world, instead of seemingly left out of it.

Through this important work, we hope that all of us will develop a deeper understanding of the diversity within the greater society and how collectively, we are stronger for it.

Curriculum Update

I would also like to share with you that our elementary teams are currently immersed in developing a 3-year plan related to reading and writing. We are very excited about this work which includes a thorough analysis of our current programs, visiting other schools with programs we have an interest in, engaging teachers in cross-site grade-level discussions, developing a vertically aligned assessment plan, and pursuing gap analysis discussions and Professional Development to support our 3-year vision.

Much appreciation to our teaching teams for their efforts and Mrs. Treewater, assistant superintendent, for her leadership and guidance.

A Note from the County Superintendent of Schools

In partnership with the Marin County Sheriff and District Attorney, I am sharing the attached letter to parents/guardians of Marin County students related to the safe storage of guns if they are in the home. With an estimated 4.6 million children living in homes with access to unlocked guns, we want to emphasize the need for raising awareness about the guidelines for the safe storage of guns under California law. In addition, we want parents and all community members to take extra steps to prevent tragedies including: storing guns safely, asking about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes, and recognizing risk factors and warning signs of suicide and depression – and speak up.

Please share the attached letters, translated in English and Spanish, with your school community as appropriate. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students and community safe.
